Financing Your Education
- Dependents’ Educational Assistance (Ch. 35) (dependents, survivors). Monthly educational benefit entitlement for dependents and survivors of veterans who are 100-percent disabled or who died of a service-connected cause or were a POW or MIA.
- John David Fry Scholarship (Post-9/11 GI Bill) (dependents) – Tuition and fees (with limits), monthly living stipend and book allowance to include children of those who died in line of duty after Sept. 10, 2001.
- Montgomery GI Bill (Ch. 30) (active duty, reservists, veterans) – A monthly educational benefit entitlement dependent on length of military service and student status.
- Post-9/11 GI Bill (Ch. 33) (active duty, reservists, veterans) – Tuition and fees (with limits), monthly living stipend and book allowance based on length of service after Sept. 10, 2001.
- Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP – Ch. 1607) (reservists) – Monthly educational benefit entitlement available to reservists activated after Sept. 11, 2001.
- Reserve GI Bill (Ch. 1606) (reservists) – Monthly educational benefit entitlement available to reservists.
- Transfer of Post-9/11 GI-Bill Benefits to Dependents (TEB) (dependents, survivors) – Educational benefits transferred to spouses or children by eligible service members enrolled in Post-9/11 GI Bill program.
- Tuition Assistance (active duty, reservists) – Tuition assistance resources specific to the major military branches and select National Guard and Reserves.
- Vocational Rehabilitation (Ch. 31) (veterans) – Tuition and fee benefits for those with specific disability ratings by the Department of Veterans Affairs due to service-related injury.
Tuition Assistance (TA) is a benefit offered to service members to assist with the cost of tuition. Military Tuition Assistance typically covers 100 percent of tuition, up to the $250 cap per credit hour. UOTP’s undergraduate tuition rate is $240 per credit hour and the University offers some scholarships for military personnel in the graduate program. Tuition Assistance only applies to tuition; students still need to pay semester fees.
Each military branch has its own TA application form and procedures.To find out how to get started, visit your local installation education center, go online to a virtual education center, or click on the following links for each service branch:
- UOTP does not impose a FAFSA priority application deadline, however it is recommended that students who wish to pursue federal aid submit their FAFSA by June 15 and December 15.
- Military Tuition Assistance does not pay for fees unless a base education office or branch service portal specifies on a TA authorization form or request a willingness to do so.
- Students will be responsible for grades that are not deemed successful. The following grades are acceptable:
- Undergraduate: C grade or higher
- Graduate: B grade or higher (- and + will be treated as just a letter grade).
- Unearned TA policy: UOTP will return any unearned TA funds to the service member’s branch of service on a proportional basis through the 60 percent portion of the enrollment period for which the funds were provided. Any unearned funds returned based upon when a student stops attending. In instances when a service member stops attending due to a military service obligation, UOTP will offer a 100 percent tuition refund upon receipt of an academic petition from the service member documenting proof of the service obligation.
- Anyone wishing to utilize TA, please speak with your Educational Services Officer (ESO) or counselor within your military service prior to enrolling.
- Important Dates & Deadlines – Tuition assistance authorization forms must be submitted to the School Certifying Official (SCO) by the semester payment deadlineeach semester. Students are encouraged to submit authorization forms at least two weeks prior to the deadline to allow adequate processing time. UOTP does not impose a FAFSA priority application deadline, however it is recommended that students who wish to pursue federal aid submit their FAFSA at least two weeks prior to the payment deadline. It is normal for some FASFA applications to require additional student paperwork with the institution and early submission allows the student time to understand, collect, and submit any follow up document items to complete their application. Cost statements can be requested in the Student Financial Services Department by calling 202-274-2327 or via email- [email protected].
You can use your veterans education benefits to help pay for your education at UOTP. Your eligibility depends on a number of factors. - Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts – The U.S. Department of Defense offers Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts, MyCAA, a program that provides as much as $4,000 in financial assistance to eligible military spouses toward an Associate of Artsor any of our undergraduate and graduate certificates. The program is capped at $2,000 a year and is available to spouses of active-duty military personnel in pay grades E1-E5, W1-W2, and O1-O2.
- Veterans Education Benefits for Military Spouses and Dependent Children – If you qualify for veterans education benefits as a spouse or dependent child of an active-duty servicemember or veteran, you can use those benefits to help pay for your education at UMGC. Your eligibility depends on a number of factors.
- Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill
- Chapter 35: Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance Program (DEA)
- University of the Potomac has well-trained and dedicated Financial Aid Administrators. The Student Financial Services office evaluates, approves, and awards financial aid to students in accordance with federal, state, and University regulations, policies, and guidelines.
- You may be eligible for several types of financial aid that will help pay for college. You should submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)even if you are receiving VA educational benefits. Some GI Bill® benefits are not impacted by the FAFSA.

Qualifications
University of the Potomac provides tuition assistance, GI Bill®, and credit transfers for Active Duty Military, families of service members, and Veterans. This institution is approved to offer GI Bill® educational benefits by the Virginia State Approving Agency.
Any veteran who has served at least 90 days of active duty after September 11, 2001, and received an honorable discharge is eligible to take advantage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill®. Veterans who served 30 days but were honorably discharged for a service-related disability also qualify for the new GI Bill® benefits.

Graduate Program Applicants: Make Sure your Essay is Top Notch
Your essay is a reflection of your motivations and ability to communicate. Take time to write a great essay and ensure you are responding to the topic appropriately and with enough detail. Write a few drafts of your essay and be sure to check your spelling and grammar after every round of edits.

Doctoral Completion Program (DCP) Admissions Requirements
This program is for students who have previously completed doctoral courses and/or partial dissertation chapters from a previous institution. To be considered for admission into the Doctoral Completion Program (DCP) students must submit the following documentation and meet the requirements below:

Yellow Ribbon Program
The Yellow Ribbon GI Education Enhancement Program (Yellow Ribbon Program) is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008. This program allows institutions of higher learning (degree granting institutions) in the United States to enter voluntarily into an agreement with Veterans Affairs to fund tuition expenses. The institution can contribute up to 50% of those expenses and Veterans Affairs will match the same amount as the institution.
Private or Foreign School: Up to $24,476.79 per academic year National Maximum.
